RESOURCES

Live Transcript button in Zoom meeting

As part of Zoom’s commitment to connecting users across the world, they are focused on continually enhancing their features to provide a platform that is accessible to all of the diverse communities they serve. So it is important that you frequently check for updates to get the most out of this tool.

A recent addition to the many Zoom features available to us is the ability to enable automatic closed captioning during your meeting, along with a live transcript offering that can show up on a side panel during your meetings.

Now while this feature is helpful for those of us unable to provide captioning manually or with a third-party service, it is important to understand that it does have limitations. Live transcription currently only supports English and the accuracy of the feature depends on many variables, such as but not limited to:

  • Background noise
  • Volume and clarity of the speaker’s voice
  • Speaker’s proficiency with the English language
  • Lexicons and dialects specific to a geography or community

Because of these limitations, if you are required to use speech-to-text support for any compliance or accessibility needs, we do recommend using a manual captioner or service that may be able to guarantee a specific accuracy.

Enable Closed Captioning

  1. Navigate to zoom.uncg.edu
  2. Sign in using your UNC Greenrboso email address and password
  3. Click Settings
  4. Navigate to the In Meeting (Advanced) features to find the Closed Captioning section
  5. Click the toggle button to turn this feature on and consider enabling the live transcription services to show the transcript on the side panel during the meeting.

How will Captions and Transcripts appear during your session

In this video, we quickly show you how to turn on Live Transcript during a meeting, by clicking on the Live Transcript button. We also show you how to click the caret symbol (^) next to the Live Transcript button to show a full transcript in a side panel during your session.

Update Zoom

To utilize these new features, you may need to update your Zoom client. Zoom updates do not happen automatically by UNC Greensboro, occasionally Zoom may do a push, but this is something you should consider checking occasionally. Review the Upgrade/update to the latest version article from the Zoom Help Center or view the video below to see how you can update your version.
