To learn more about the OneDrive integration in Canvas, watch the OneDrive Integration in Canvas (12:30) video below and/or review the information below about Course Navigation, the Rich Content Editor (RCE), Collaborations, and Assignments.

Course Navigation

Provide a link in the course navigation to allow your students to easily gain access to their Microsoft OneDrive space directly from within your course. From there, you and your students will be able to create new folders, move files around (by drag-and-drop only), and open files within their respective OneDrive space.

Enable this feature by clicking on to Settings and then selecting Navigation. From there you will drag and drop the OneDrive Integration option into the course menu and click Save.

Rich Content Editor

The Rich Content Editor (RCE) is a simple, yet powerful, word processor that is available anytime for creating new content (assignments, announcement, discussions, blogs, etc.).

Within the RCE formatting buttons, click the Plugins button (if you don’t see a plug icon, click the three-dot icon to expand and see additional options), select View All, and then choose Microsoft OneDrive.

You may have to sign in to your UNCG Microsoft OneDrive account to get started!

  • Embed: This option will embed the file directly on the page for easy access, but it’s a small window and viewers will likely need to scroll and zoom.
  • Link: This option will put a link on the Canvas page. When you click the link, it opens a new browser tab with a read-only version of the file.

Once you have embedded or linked a file this way, when you view the file as instructor you will see an “Edit Document” button at the top right. If you want to edit it, you MUST click the EDIT DOCUMENT button from within the course; if you go back to OneDrive and update the original file, it will NOT reflect in the course. If you edit the file via the EDIT DOCUMENT button, it will NOT update in your OneDrive

Collaborations

This provides you a way to initiative a collaborative OneDrive document, such as a Word document, PowerPoint presentation, or an Excel spreadsheet from within Canvas that any or all of your students can collaborate in real-time.

  1. Choose an existing document you already have in your OneDrive or you can initiate a new, blank document.
  2. Select the students you would like to be able to work within the document.

When you click on the collaborative document, it opens in a new tab that you can then click the Edit Document button to start editing.

Assignments

  • Student Submission: This option allows students to submit their assignments directly from their OneDrive for File Upload submission types. Students will see a three dot More button which will allow them to browse their OneDrive files to upload to the assignment. Instructors will then be able to view, markup, and grade the files in SpeedGrader.
  • Instructor Template: This option allows instructors to create a template file for students to then gain access to a copy of the template that they can complete before submitting to the assignment. After submitting, instructors will be able to view, markup, and grade the template submission in SpeedGrader.
